Residential Carpet Styles Guide

So you’re building a new home or have decided to remodel and it’s time to shop for flooring. You already know you want a carpet that looks like this and in this color, right? That is until you walk into the showroom. There are SO many options, styles, colors and now I’m not sure if that is what I want or not! Let us help you. Carpet can be grouped into 4 main styles.

Each of these styles has its own look, its own pros, and cons. Some styles of carpet are better options for certain spaces than others depending on the specification of that carpet.

Please continue to read to find out the 4 main styles of carpet.

cut-pile-carpetLEVEL LOOP PILE

First, let start out with 2 terms you will need to know. Cut Pile and Level Loop Pile. Cut Pile is a style of carpet that is sheared, exposing the ends of the carpet fiber. Cut piles come in different lengths and thicknesses. They are the most popular styles of carpet today and tend to be softer underfoot and to touch than loop pile carpets. Our carpets are created in either cut pile, loop pile or a combination of the two styles. … Cut pile carpets are manufactured by cutting the yarn loops which produces an upright pile that has a more luxurious, formal look than loop pile.

 Saxony/Plush

The first and probably the most popular style is Saxony. Saxony carpet is a medium length, cut pile. The softness of Saxony carpet makes it a popular choice for bedrooms and formal living rooms. There are 2 styles of Saxony carpet a Straight Saxony and a Textured Saxony.  The straight Saxony carpets are also known as velvet Saxony carpets because they look similar to velvet, although they feel significantly different. Straight Saxony is the more common kind of Saxony; you can easily recognize them by passing your hand over the fibers. When you do, the disturbed fibers will take on a different color due to being pushed opposite their natural direction. Although these carpets can look and feel calming, they’re prone to displaying vacuum strokes and footprints due to the fiber alignment. Textured saxonies, on the other hand, are a more recent design. Also called trackless saxonies, they feature fibers twisted in a variety of directions. As a result, when you pass your hand over them, they don’t change color nearly as much because they’re already reflecting light in many different directions. They’ve gained popularity among homeowners and commercial owners (e.g., landlords, small businesses) interested in Saxony carpeting without the tell-tale Saxony footprints and vacuum strokes.

Platinum Plus is a beautiful Saxony that is offered in a 50 oz., 60 oz., and 70 oz. and available in 15 great color choices.

Berber

Berber carpet has a loop-styled construction. Loop-style carpet is manufactured with multiple loops, instead of strands. Wool Berber is considered the luxury of Berber carpets. While olefin Berber takes the reign as the economical Berber carpet variety. If you are looking for a Berber carpet that will show some durability but not break the bank, nylon may be the right fiber for you. Berber carpet is ideal for someone who does not like vacuum marks or footprints and enjoys a clean casual look.  The biggest advantage of Berber carpet and why it is a popular choice is durability. The majority of Berbers are more durable than most other styles of residential carpet. The reason it is more durable is that the fibers are looped and in general looped form fibers are stronger than if they are in cut form. That is not to say that a low-quality Berber is going to be more durable than a high-quality Saxony, because it is not. When comparing a Saxony and a Berber or any different styles of carpet they need to be of the same quality. Hence, you will usually be able to get a more durable rug for the same amount of money. Now, for the disadvantage, snags. Berber is more susceptible to snags than other styles of residential carpet. If the snag is not repaired and the vacuum gets a hold of strand it will unravel and cause a much worse problem.

Frieze

Frieze carpet also called a twist carpet, is a tightly twisted carpet. Higher quality frieze carpeting will contain up to 7-9 twists per inch, creating a curled appearance. Frieze carpet works well in high traffic areas like family rooms and hallways because of the casual look and the durability. Some of the main pros of Frieze is it conceals dirt, footprints and even vacuum marks. This is because the twisted, curly surface is more forgiving than a Saxony straight edge.  The cons of Frieze carpet are they can be difficult to clean and the price. The long strands will cause spills to more than likely go everywhere instead of staying on the top like on short pile carpet. A true frieze carpet with its highly twisted fibers is more costly than other carpet styles – but the frieze will look better for longer and you will find that you made a good investment.

APPRECIATION SNOWFALL

A great LCL style named Appreciation in the color Snowfall

LCL

LCL stands for level cut loop. This carpet combines cut and looped fibers that are level with each other. LCL is ideal for someone looking for a carpet easy to clean with a slight pattern to dress up the room a little. It provides a variety of surface textures or sculptured effects for durability.  Cut and loop pile carpets are available in solid and multi-color designs.  The different type of fibers in this type of carpet can hide dirt and footprints in formal and informal areas and provide a crisp refined look to any space. The only disadvantage of a patterned carpet is deciding whether or not if you can step out of your comfort zone and purchase a patterned carpet or going with the normal plain carpet because of the overwhelming design decisions.

Conclusion

Deciding on a style of carpet is one of the main steps in choosing your carpet, but don’t stress out over it. Yes, the style will have an impact on carpet performance, but by being knowledgeable about the different styles of carpet available, you can make most work in any home.
